UGC vs. Polished Ads: What the Conversion Data Shows

Two contrasting video production setups side by side: polished studio lights vs casual home setup

The narrative around UGC performance tends toward simple claims: authentic content outperforms polished ads, real people convert better than production studios, users trust other users more than brands. Those claims are largely directionally correct. But they flatten a more nuanced picture, and the nuances are where brand teams make expensive mistakes.

When we reviewed ad set performance data from brands in our early-access cohort, comparing campaigns where the same brand ran both UGC and studio-produced creative in parallel, UGC outperformed polished creative in a majority of cases on direct response metrics (click-through rate, cost per link click, purchase conversion rate). But a meaningful portion of cases went the other way. The cases where studio creative won had a clear pattern. Understanding that pattern is more useful than the headline number.

Where UGC Consistently Wins

UGC outperforms polished creative most reliably in three contexts: feed-native placements, first-consideration purchases, and product categories where trust is the primary purchase barrier.

Feed-native placements, particularly TikTok For You Page and Meta Reels, are surfaces where viewers scroll through content produced by ordinary people. A production-quality video with brand watermarks and professional lighting reads as an interruption. A creator video that matches the surrounding content in format, pacing, and visual register does not trigger the same skip reflex. The creative blends in, and blending in is an advantage in a scroll environment.

For first-consideration purchases, meaning products where a viewer has no strong existing brand preference and is evaluating options for the first time, social proof from a real person carries significant weight. A creator who says "I have tried four of these and this one is the one I actually keep using" does something a professional ad cannot do: it adds a specific, credible individual endorsement that functions like a word-of-mouth recommendation.

In categories where trust is a barrier (supplements, skincare actives, fitness devices, financial apps), authentic voice consistently outperforms brand-produced creative in getting a first-time buyer over the threshold. The viewer needs to feel like a real person evaluated this product before they will try it.

Where Studio Creative Holds Its Own

Studio creative does not go away even for DTC brands that are committed to UGC programs. There are specific scenarios where polished production consistently outperforms creator video.

Retargeting audiences are the clearest case. Someone who has already visited your product page, added to cart, or watched most of a previous video is not in first-evaluation mode anymore. They have already formed some intent. A polished, high-production creative that reinforces brand confidence, shows the product in its best light, and removes final objections often converts better at this stage than another creator video. Retargeting is not about trust building, it is about conviction. Studio creative handles conviction better.

High-consideration purchases, where the price point is high enough that the buyer needs to feel confident in the brand's credibility and quality, also tend to perform better with polished creative. If someone is spending a significant amount on a product, an amateur-production video from a creator may not give them the confidence signal they need. The brand still needs to look like it takes itself seriously.

Luxury-adjacent categories follow the same logic. The production quality signals the product quality. A beautifully lit, carefully composed studio video says something about the brand that a phone-filmed creator integration cannot.

The Mixed-Format Approach That Most Teams Underuse

The most effective approach across the brands in our cohort was not "only UGC" or "only studio." It was a deliberate segmentation: UGC for top-of-funnel awareness and first-consideration, studio creative for retargeting and high-intent conversion sequences. The two formats do different jobs and they do those jobs best when allocated intentionally.

Teams that saw the strongest results ran UGC as their primary awareness spend, used it to generate a pool of top-performing videos, then identified the two or three creator videos with the highest click-through rate and amplified those with paid placement. When a retargeting audience came back, they served polished brand creative or a cleaner product-focus video. The UGC opened the door; the polished creative closed the sale.

This is not complicated to implement, but it requires a clear performance tracking setup. You need to know which UGC video drove the original site visit before you can serve a rational retargeting sequence. Most teams are not tracking this granularly, so they run UGC and studio creative in parallel against the same audiences without any segmentation logic. That produces muddled data and makes it impossible to know what is actually working at each stage of the funnel.

What the Data Does Not Tell You

Performance data from our early-access cohort is directional evidence from a specific group of brands at a specific moment. We are not drawing conclusions about every product category, every audience, or every platform. Categories with different trust dynamics, price points, or audience demographics will show different patterns.

What we can say with confidence: the question is not "UGC or polished creative?" It is "what format does this specific audience, at this specific funnel stage, respond to for this specific product?" That question has an empirical answer for every brand, and it requires testing rather than defaulting to either camp's narrative.

The brands that outperform on UGC programs are not the ones who chose UGC and committed to it dogmatically. They are the ones who ran both, measured rigorously, and allocated budget to whatever was actually performing at each stage. That discipline is more valuable than any general statement about which format wins.
